Church Message Each Christmas, we reflect for a few minutes about the true meaning of this season. The birth of Jesus forever changed our world; it was the most stupendous event in human history. A civilization was born and a new era began. Christmas, behind the façade of Christmas trees, tinsel and coloured lights, is all about change and a new direction. The person of Jesus, the Christ, in His life, death, His teaching and the example He gave, portrays the true purpose of our earthly life and how it should be lived. The story of how Jesus came into the world, what He said and did, and how He left the world while still remaining in it, has been told, expounded and illustrated more than any other event in the history of mankind. God became a man so that you and I might become more like Him in whose image we are created. The theme of the life of Jesus is living life the way that God intends us to live. Christmas is all about change. Which one of us has not noticed that each Christmas things change, things become totally different? Not only are lights and decorations abundantly evident but also people are friendlier, kinder, more generous and more courteous! People just seem to be better in their relationships with others. We, as a people, are really at our best during the Christmas Season. People smile and speak to strangers – there is just a whole new lustre to the world. The Bible is a book about relationships – people relating to people and people interacting with God. These relationships are based on trust and integrity. The Old Testament is all about creation; the New Testament is all about re-creation. At Christmas, we feel re-created, new and at peace. Life seems to take on a new meaning because of the way people change in the way they interact with others. The Christmas message is that we are not to revert back to our old ways but keep that same warmth, affection and goodwill for all people twelve months of the year. This is what God offers us in the message of Jesus, the opportunity to change! You can choose – you have the ability to make choices! It is the greatest gift because meaning enters our lives when we accept the freedom to choose. You can choose the kind of person you want to be. You can choose the way that you are going to interact with others. Choices come our way every hour of every day. It is the choices we make that reflect the type of person we become. Christmas challenges us to make choices following the example of Jesus; when we do, it will not only transform our lives but will transform the world around us. I take this opportunity to wish each one of you and your loved ones a most blessed Christmas. |
